Sunderland's 2013/14 season was already extraordinary: a League Cup final, a relegation fight and a late escape that included taking points at City and winning at Chelsea and Manchester United.
The City effect
The league model does not help them: their 2–2 draw at the Etihad and home win over City mean four Sunderland points disappear, moving them from 14th to 16th in the recalculated table. The real intersection is Wembley, where Sunderland led City 1–0 at half-time in the League Cup final before losing 3–1.

The butterfly effect 🦋
A cup competition cannot be recalculated like a league. Remove City and somebody else reaches the final through City's side of the bracket. Sunderland therefore do not automatically become champions. Our separate Trophy Effect convention can imagine the losing finalist inheriting the cup; from there the real question is what a first major trophy since 1973 and European football might have done for Poyet's Sunderland.

The legacy
Sunderland survived that season after a remarkable late run and remained in the Premier League until 2017. A trophy and European campaign might have changed the memory, finances and status of the Poyet side. It cannot tell us the later relegation disappears.
