Villa had finished sixth three seasons running. They were knocking on the Champions League door, not appearing from nowhere. In 2009/10 they also reached the League Cup final and FA Cup semi-final.
The City effect
City moved above Villa at precisely that moment. Gareth Barry left for City in 2009, James Milner followed in 2010 and Fabian Delph in 2015. Those moves are recorded; what Villa might have built if they had stayed is another question.
